Seasonality simply refers to consistent inventory with predictable or repeated supply and demand cycles over an extended period of time. Supply chain management is the study of these patterns and how they impact the firm. Seasonality impacts several aspects of the supply chain including planning, manufacturing, and shipping. It also affects other industries such as food service, transportation, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, furniture, and chemical processing.

Seasonality impacts supply chain management by increasing inventory levels and reducing demand, which in turn lowers inventory costs and increases profit margins. Inventory forecasting offers an essential service for managers who are confronted with increasing inventory levels and decreasing demand. To help managers understand and plan for seasonal fluctuations in demand, a company must first identify which industries experience high or low activity level according to their own processes. Once these industries are identified, the supply chain management software can be used to forecast seasonal variation across those industries, allowing managers to effectively plan for future production and sales.

Seasonality is a complex concept that requires advanced analysis and forecasting skills. A company's ability to predict demand in future periods will in effect dictate its profitability and its ability to control its inventories. Seasonal variations in demand will have a significant impact on the profitability of a company's production and distribution as well as its logistical costs. If correct inventory control is implemented, then even small changes can have a large impact on inventory costs and profitability.
