The word autopoiesis comes from the Greek word "apoplosis" meaning "to make new". Nowadays the word "autopoiesis" is used for referring to the art of producing new items in mass scale, usually using automated machines. The concept of autopoiesis dates back to the earliest civilizations in the

history of human civilization. For instance, the Aztecs used it to create giant sugar cane harvesters that were used to grind corn and other foods. Another example is the wheelbarrow used by the early Chinese to transport grain from one place to another.

While autopoiesis may have evolved through the history of human civilization, it was first used by planned economies to form the theoretical foundation of planned economies. For instance, during World War II German planners planned on using their factories to manufacture weapons components which were then used to support the fighting effort against the British. The planners figured that if they built large numbers of identical machines that performed similar functions, they could use the experience and knowledge of their past production runs to build better machines for future factories to produce weapons components. The theory of planned Autopoiesis was later extended to the realm of welfare state projects such as those in China, India, the United States and others.

Autopoiesis is a relatively new term for a technology. It is not clear whether this is related to interaction systems, planned economy or welfare state programs. One possible relation is the development of interaction systems that allow for a greater degree of personalization and social differentiation.
