The act of moving a supply vehicle back from its original point of origination to the intended point of destination. The 1980 Motor Carrier Act legalized interstate trucking and allowed carriers to contract to arrange for the delivery back to the origin point. The backhaul is normally with an empty partial, or full load.

Backhauling is used in the transportation of goods from the manufacturer/distributor point of origin to the final retail customer. It involves the movement of inventory between various vehicles that are used in the supply chain. The backups are usually used when there is a large amount of inventory, where heavy vehicles are needed to transport the inventory and where loads need to stay close to the manufacturing facility for an extended period of time. Backhaulers also move goods that are on the receiving end of the distribution network. This could be perishable or non-perishable inventory.

There are many benefits to using third-party logistics services for blackmailing. They include improved customer service from a warehousing perspective, faster times to market, a reduction in capital expenditures for opening and operating a warehouse, and quicker inventory updates from warehouse scanning and bar code technologies. Some of the benefits include better inventory tracking, less wear and tear on warehouse equipment, lower costs for raw materials, and an increase in the number of products that can be delivered per truck.
