The meaning of attrition simply means the natural decrease in the number of individuals working in an organization, or the gradual wearing down of human capital. For instance, one army with many divisions gradually loses
the initiative in a conflict. Another example is one nation's army, slowly but surely wearing out the armed forces of another nation. There are many other examples of attrition, such as the reduction of life expectancy in a generation, or the depletion of the ozone layer.
In the business setting, the term attrition can mean a number of things, including staff attrition, project cancellations, employee lay-offs, the reduction of profits due to lay-offs, and business bankruptcies. These are all considered part of the business "attrition," and are not considered to be in bad terms. However, in some cases these can become very bad things, especially if such instances are allowed to persist for a long period of time. For instance, the prolonged loss of business profits in the case of a company that operates a number of small businesses instead of one large manufacturing operation could result in millions of dollars of additional losses over the years.
Some businesses attempt to reduce staff turnover through the use of various programs. For instance, some companies offer tuition assistance to returning employees who wish to return to school, often at reduced costs. A second method often used is for companies to encourage workers to take voluntary leave at specified times, often for a longer period of time than would otherwise be allowed by mandatory Staff Shortage Surveys. One third way that businesses attempt to reduce their rate of involuntary unemployment is by offering incentives to employees who accept voluntary leave. These incentives can range from a small cash bonus to an expanded work schedule or new career opportunities.
