The warehouse floor of any modern manufacturing facility is lined with racks of goods stacked in high volume according to current demand. Every department in every factory has its own designated area to store finished products and raw materials.

The warehouse floor must be designed and built so that goods can be accessed quickly by warehouse employees, material handlers, packers and stockers. Warehouse floors must be vibration and moisture free in order to facilitate the movement of heavy goods and supplies. Warehouse real estate management and planning require the proper placement of equipment, shelving and storage to optimize floor space and optimize traffic patterns.

Aisles are, in essence, a series of steps or an aisle. An aisle is, essentially, a series of flat floor areas, stacked one above the other, with the doorways between shelves or rows usually located along the length of an aisle. In manufacturing, an aisle is usually defined as a movable space adjacent to a load center that enables materials to be moved from area A to area B. In retail, an aisle is usually defined as a moveable room, often movable between departments, providing easy access from A to B. In distribution, an aisle is a line of shop floor seats, generally wall-mounted, designed to allow workers easy access to the items being stocked. In a food service operation, an aisle is a set of tables or seating in a common food court designed to provide workers easy access to prep tables, serving carts, prep tables, and restrooms.

Designing an aisle describes the position of doors and their functional placement, as well as the placement of shelves and other features. In a grocery store, aisle design would include the positions of the food display, produce, refrigeration and checkout counters. Designing an aisle can include the placement of product displays, shelves and countertop features. In order to design an efficient and safe aisle, the design team should consider all factors that affect accessibility to customers. For example, wheelchair lift aisles should be positioned close to the checkout counters so that wheelchair bound customers do not have to move across the store to pick up their products.
